Sharp Optonica 5100

A little bit strange is the first impression you get looking at the Optonica.
It's like a plastic bathtub with a few knobs. The only turntable I remember right know, which has got a massive glass-lid as cover, no cheap plastic (as the rest of the player is...)! Nevertheless ist's got a stylish appearance. |

This player is fully automatic, all functions can be accessed by the buttons on
the front panel. The 5100 provides a tonearm-lift, start and stop functions, a
disc-size and speed selector and a fine-pitch for speed-control.
The bigger brother 7100 features a second arm, mounted parallel to the tonearm, to detect the gaps between two songs, so it should be possible to 'program' the player with the additional buttons. The platter is direct-driven and I was surprised that it's nearly noiseless. I used my trusty stethoscope to detect noise made by the motor or bearing - nothing! |

In return the tonearm is not exactly what one would call 'high-end'. It comes with an Audio Technica cartridge, I would say it's an AT71. Although being a very heavy arm and hard to adjust, it works well. The little dot near the platter is intended to adjust the stylus on it... a totally wrong position. After all, I must admit, that this turntable is not as bad as it looks. Easy to use and nice to look at, it would do a fine job as player for the bedroom e.g. (it's got a fantastic 'repeat' function I didn't mention - listen to the same record all night long!!!). |

I've got a test-report in an old german hifi-magazine from the early 80s... as soon as I find it, I'll put a scan or whatever here. Said and done... some diagrams with measuring data (german!) here. |
